Syntharp

A sophisticated electronic force field induces vibration to the strings. Using this technique, every partitial can be accessed without physically touching the string. The syntharp reacts directly to any signal envelope given – even very sharp attacks. Thus the composers can access the microcosm of the partitial structure of a string. The Syntharp makes the link between modern sound generation techniques (computers, synthesizers) and the acoustic world of strings.

Arion Pascal (born 1957) studied classical guitar and composition at the conservatory of Zurich. Over 10 years ago, he has started to develop the Syntharp I, followed by the Syntharp II which has been presented at the Frankfurt Music Fair 2002. The project has received an award from the Ausserrhodish Culture Foundation. The interstate technical college of Buchs (CH) has collaborated in designing CAD and electric circuits.

John Flury (born 1976) studies music and software engineering in Zurich, he is working on fundamental analysis and sound design for the Syntharp as well as software that enables interactive realtime composition using sensory input.
